Dry weather allows farmers another good week to get into the field

DES MOINES — Another dry week allowed farmers plenty of time to get into the field, according to the latest Iowa Crop Report from the US Department of Agriculture.

Statewide there were 6.0 days on average suitable for fieldwork during the week ending September 7th. The north-central crop reporting district saw 5.7 days suitable. Disease pressure in row crops remains a concern to producers, with field activities including cutting and bailing hay and harvesting corn silage.

97% of Iowa’s corn has reached the dough stage, with that number being 99% here in north-central Iowa. 80% of corn was dented or beyond, five days ahead of last year but equal to the five-year average. 26% has matured. Here locally, 85% has dented and 11% is mature. Corn condition is rated 1% very poor, 4% poor, 15% fair, 57% good and 23% excellent.

Soybeans setting pods reached 98%. Soybeans coloring statewide advanced to 44%, two days ahead of last year but one day behind average. 11% were dropping leaves. Here in north-central Iowa, 31% of soybeans were coloring and 4% had dropped leaves. Soybean condition is rated 1% very poor, 3% poor, 20% fair, 58% good and 18% excellent.
