Britt man found not guilty of election misconduct

GARNER — A Hancock County jury has found a Britt man is not guilty of election misconduct.

The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation filed the charge back in April against 75-year-old Roque Vasquez. The criminal complaint stated that Vasquez voted at a polling place in June of 2022, with the same records showing he registered to vote in August 1999.

The DCI in its complaint stated that Vasquez is a legal resident of Iowa but is not a citizen of the United States, and in order to register to vote in Iowa, all registrants are required to attest under penalty of perjury that they are United States citizens.

In a one-day trial held last week, a jury returned a not guilty verdict. Had Vasquez been convicted, he would have faced up to five years in prison on the Class D felony-level charge.
