Dry weather helps farmers get closer to harvest

DES MOINES — Farmers had plenty of time to get into the fields in the past week as harvesting the 2025 corn and soybean crop is right around the corner.

The new Iowa Crop Report from the US Department of Agriculture says Iowa farmers had 6.5 days suitable for fieldwork during the past week, with field activities including finishing up the third cutting of hay, harvesting corn silage, and preparing for row crop harvest.

90% of corn statewide was dented or beyond, five days ahead of last year and one day ahead of the five-year average. 48% of the corn has matured, four days ahead of last year and three days ahead of average. Here in the north-central crop reporting district, 95% of corn has dented and 41% was mature.

Corn condition statewide was 1% very poor, 4% poor, 16% fair, 59% good and 20% excellent.

Soybeans coloring statewide advanced to 73%, two days ahead of last year and one day ahead of average. 35% of soybeans were dropping leaves. Here in north-central Iowa, 74% of soybeans were coloring while 22% were dropping leaves.

Soybean condition statewide was 1% very poor, 4% poor, 20% fair, 57% good and 18% excellent.
