Iowa Court of Appeals to hold special session in Clear Lake Wednesday morning

CLEAR LAKE — The Iowa Court of Appeals will be hearing oral arguments of two cases during a specially-scheduled session in Clear Lake Wednesday morning.

The Court of Appeals’ Chief Judge Mary Tabor says it’s part of their effort to educate the public about the state’s court system, and it also will bring a Clear Lake native who sits on the court back to his hometown.   “Our ‘Appeals on Wheels’ as we like to call it, we like to get out and go across the state, and we’ve also tried to go when we are out and about places where some of our judges use as their hometowns. Our Judge Sam Langholz is from Clear Lake, so that’s one of the reasons that we’ve chosen to go there.”

The event will take place at the Clear Lake Middle School, and Tabor says they like the opportunity to further educate students and the general public about the court system by going to a school setting.  “We think it’s very important to bring the civics alive for the students, and having a student audience is very rewarding for us, and just kind of reinforcing the importance of the Constitution. We’ll be there on September 17th, which is Constitution Day, so we’re really grateful for the Clear Lake Community School District for hosting us.”

The event takes place at the EB Stillman Auditorium on the Clear Lake Middle School campus starting at 9:30 Wednesday morning. The oral arguments are open to the public.
