Sculpture made of silverware is “Best in Show” winner of River City Sculptures on Parade

MASON CITY — The “Best in Show” award has been given for this year’s edition of the River City Sculptures on Parade.
The award is given out each year after being judged by an esteemed panel led by MacNider Art Museum director Edith Blanchard. Blanchard says this year’s winner, “Owling at the Moon”, is created by Ohio-based artists Gary Hovey and Jim Perrine, whose creations are very uniquely made. “They have a business in which they create sculptures specifically out of unique material which is silverware. So if you take a closer look at this, it’s made entirely out of spoons, forks, knives, some of them are used as whole pieces, some of them are cut up.”
Blanchard says the committee evaluates a number of things to select the “Best in Show” winner. “One of the things that the committee does is it looks at the overall sculpture. We look at the difficulty, we look at the subject matter, what are they saying or implying, use of theme, what’s the material, how’s the craftsmanship, use of space. All those fun art things.”
The sculpture is located near the corner of East State Street and Pennsylvania Avenue. Hovey and Perrine will get a cash award. Their sculpture is for sale listed at $19,500.
