Hampton woman faces 35 years in prison after possessing marijuana near school

HAMPTON — A Hampton woman faces up to 35 years in prison after authorities say she possessed marijuana near a school.

A criminal complaint filed by the Hampton Police Department says they were alerted to a medical call on August 30th at the Lantern Park Apartments, where on arrival, they say they found 29-year-old Amanda Orozco in her car, and appeared to be sleeping or passed out behind the wheel.

The officer says he was able to get Orozco to wake up, and when she opened the door, the officer said they could detect a strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle. A search allegedly turned up a locked grey zippered case, which Orozco apparently declined to open. After obtaining a search warrant, the officer discovered the case contained several marijuana grinders, a digital scale, small baggies, and five bags that contained about four ounces of marijuana in total.

Orozco was charged with: distributing drugs near a school, a Class B felony punishable by up to 25 years in prison; as well as possession of marijuana and failure to affix a drug tax stamp, each a Class D felony.
