Friday night football preview — #1 Clear Lake at #7 Independence, rest of area schedule

INDEPENDENCE — #1 Clear Lake opens up Class 3A District 2 play tonight with another ranked matchup as they travel to #7 Independence. Both teams are 4-0 on the season after wrapping up non-district play last week.

Clear Lake coach Aaron Stensland says Independence has a high-power offense led by their senior quarterback Chris Meyer. “Statistically, this is the best team in Class 3A football. I think they lead Class 3A in total yards. Their quarterback might not be the leader in yards, in rushing yards, but I think all-purpose or total yards he is the leader at around 1700 or 1800. I wouldn’t call him a one-man show, they’ve got a lot of weapons that he can use, but he is definitely the focal point.”

WAVERLY — Mason City opens up Class 4A District 2 play on the road tonight with a trip to Waverly-Shell Rock. The Riverhawks are 2-2 after a 29-6 win over Marion last week. The Go-Hawks are 1-3 after a challenging non-district schedule that included losses to #2/4A Pella, Western Dubuque, and #6/3A Algona. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:15 tonight. LAKE MILLS — Lake Mills has decided to forfeit their game scheduled for tonight against #1/A West Hancock. A statement posted on the Lake Mills Community School District website says due to illness and injury, they’ve made the difficult decision to forfeit tonight’s varsity game. The statement says the health and safety of their student-athletes always remains their top priority.
