Week 6 football preview — Clear Lake hosts Benton, MCHS celebrates homecoming, area schedule

CLEAR LAKE — #1 Clear Lake hosts Benton in a Class 3A District 2 matchup tonight at Lions Field. Clear Lake is one of three teams left in Class 3A with a perfect record along with district foe West Delaware and Solon.

Benton’s two losses this season have been to 2nd-ranked Solon and 4th-ranked Mount Vernon, and Lions coach Aaron Stensland says despite a 3-2 record, the Bobcats will be ready to play. “They’ve played a pretty tough schedule. They hit Solon and Mount Vernon both at times in the top maybe three or four, or even #1 or #2, so we know they’ve played tough teams, they battled those teams very tough. I think Solon was at home and Mount Vernon was on the road, so I don’t think this big trip will bother them. They look like a physical team. They look like a team that wants to come here and run the ball and fly around on defense.”

Prior to the start of the game, Clear Lake’s 2000 state championship team will be recognized as this is the 25th anniversary year of winning the Class 3A title in triple overtime over Harlan.

MASON CITY — Mason City celebrates homecoming tonight hosting Waterloo East in a Class 4A District 2 contest. The Riverhawks are 2-3 after a heartbreaking loss at Waverly-Shell Rock last week, while the Trojans come in with an 0-5 record.
