Local firefighters union leader praises upgrades to Mason City Fire Department

MASON CITY — The head of the local union that represents firefighters in Mason City says the recently completed renovations at the Mason City Fire Department opens the next chapter into the department’s history.

Local 41 of the International Association of Fire Fighters president Lt. Neal Mackey says a firefighter spends a third of their lives at the building, eating and training together, and finding strength and pride in doing their jobs.  “It’s a place that’s so much more than bricks, mortar and steel. For us, it’s home. For the past year and a half, this project has been a labor of commitment, collaboration, and vision. What you see here today represents not only a modernized facility, but a renewed investment in the safety, well being and future of both our firefighters and the community we serve.”

Mackey says the updated facility now helps meet the needs of the modern firefighter.  “When this remodel began, we knew it wouldn’t just be about updating the building equipment or adding new furniture, it was about building a station that meets the needs of today’s fire service. One that supports the health, training, and readiness of our firefighters, and helps us respond more effectively to the growing demands of our city.”

The $5.8 million upgrade to the building constructed in 1975 includes nearly 5000 square feet of new space and extensive improvements, including enhancing firefighter readiness, energy efficiency, and comfort with updated dorms and spaces.
