Jail time for Marshalltown man who led authorities on pursuit with stolen vehicle

MASON CITY — A Marshalltown man charged with stealing a vehicle in Mason City and leading authorities on a pursuit has been sentenced to jail time.

The Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Office had said in a criminal complaint that on August 21st, a deputy located a vehicle stolen from Marshalltown the day before. An attempted traffic stop led to a pursuit, with a passenger during the pursuit jumping from the vehicle and fleeing on foot. The driver continued but eventually stopped near the intersection of 5th Northwest and North Adams.

32-year-old Alexander Kew, formerly from Mason City but residing at the time in Marshalltown, was arrested and charged with first-degree theft, second-offense eluding and driving while barred. Kew earlier this month pleaded guilty to charges of operating a motor vehicle without the owner’s consent and second-offense eluding.

Kew was sentenced by District Judge Colleen Weiland this week to a year in jail on each charge, with all but 90 days suspended on the operating a vehicle without the owner’s consent charge, and all but 45 days suspended on the eluding charge. The two sentences will be served consecutively for a total of 135 days.

Kew was also ordered to spend 180 days in a residential facility after the jail sentence, and will have to serve two years probation.
