Hinson says best way to ensure people get SNAP benefits is for Democrats to vote to reopen the government

WASHINGTON — As the federal government shutdown is now the longest in history, north-central Iowa congresswoman Ashley Hinson says it’s time for Senate Democrats to end their stalemate and pass a continuing resolution to fund the government.

“Democrats are continuing to set these new records for all the wrong reasons no matter the cost, yet they still don’t care,” says Hinson. “I’d personally like to ask Senator Schumer if he still thinks everyday is getting better during the shutdown, because I am hearing from families. Young moms are worried about their kids going hungry, military families worried about getting their next paycheck, not to mention the air traffic controllers and the TSA are working without pay while flights in many cities are getting delayed and canceled.”

Some have called on Congress to pass a short-term funding bill to cover the loss of funding the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, known as SNAP. Hinson says the best way to address the SNAP situation is for Senate Democrats to pass the continuing resolution in full.  “The best way to ensure people get SNAP benefits is for Democrats to reopen the government. Again, think about the contrast in the situation. You’ve seen now 14 votes in the Senate, Republicans have voted to keep the government open and those benefits funded. Democrats voted to turn off the SNAP benefits for the most vulnerable, and they have openly admitted that they want to use vulnerable Americans as leverage. This is not a political game. Iowans and Americans deserve better here, and it’s time for Democrats to come to the table and reopen the government.”

Senate Republicans brought the House-passed funding bill to the floor for the 14th time on Tuesday, with it once again failing.
