St. Ansgar plays for state football championship this afternoon — today’s championship schedule

CEDAR FALLS — The Saint Ansgar football team looks to capture the second state title in program history as they face Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn/Remsen-Union in the Class A championship game later today. Both teams come in with perfect 12-0 records, with the Saints beating Wapsie Valley 31-7 in last week’s semifinals, and the Royals shutting out West Sioux 28-0. Korbin Michaels leads the way for Saint Ansgar offensively, rushing for 1628 yards and scoring 31 touchdowns. The Royals have a balanced offensive attack, with junior quarterback Eli Harpenau passing for just over 1800 yards and rushing for 403 more, while senior Brayson Mulder has gained 683 yards. The Saints are looking to capture the title after winning the Class 1A championship in 2011, with many of the players on this year’s team also being a part of the baseball team that captured its first state championship back in July. Kickoff at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls is scheduled for 1 o’clock this afternoon.
