New Hampton Man Looks to Pay it Forward After $30,000 Lottery Win

A routine stop for gas led to a $30,000 Iowa Lottery win for a New Hampton man, and he’s already planning to share the good fortune.

David Knutson told the Lottery he had an extra $30 in his shirt pocket when he stopped at All Stop in Fredericksburg to fill his pickup truck. On a whim, he bought a “Premiere” scratch game ticket, tossed it on the dash, and continued driving home.

On the way, he decided to pull over and scan the ticket with the Iowa Lottery mobile app. When he realized he’d won big, he drove to his wife’s workplace to show her the ticket.

“I said, ‘My camera’s not working on my phone. Can you scan it on yours?’” Knutson recalled with a laugh. “She said, ‘Is this for real?!’ She thought I might’ve pulled one of those fake tickets that you can buy.”

Knutson claimed his prize Monday (12.01) at the lottery’s Mason City regional office. He said his big win is exciting, but the chance to share it with people around him makes it even more meaningful.

Knutson, who owns a trucking company, said, “Ten percent will go to charity, the church, and we’ve got a friend whose husband got injured, so we’ll help her out a little. Then all of our drivers will get bonuses this year. It’s been a tough couple of years in the trucking industry. It might cheer the guys up just a little.”
