Winter Storm Watch Issued for Much of Central and Northwest Iowa Saturday

The National Weather Service in Des Moines has issued a Winter Storm Watch for a large portion of northwest and central Iowa as the season’s next winter system moves in this weekend. Forecasters say 4 to 7 inches of snow, with locally higher amounts, are possible.
Snow is expected to begin after noon on Saturday, first developing in western Iowa before spreading east toward the I-35 corridor by early evening. The heaviest snowfall is likely between 6 p.m. and midnight Saturday, when moderate to heavy bands of snow may develop. Light snow will continue overnight and gradually taper off Sunday morning, followed by colder temperatures and clearing skies.
Travel impacts are likely across the region. Roadways may become snow-covered and slick, especially Saturday evening into early Sunday. The National Weather Service urges travelers to plan ahead for delays, use caution on slippery roads and sidewalks, and take frequent breaks when shoveling heavier, wet snow.
The agency recommends staying up to date on the latest forecast information and checking Iowa 511 for current road conditions. Additional winter weather safety resources are available through the National Weather Service’s Des Moines office.
The next scheduled forecast update is expected by 4 p.m. Friday, as meteorologists continue to refine snowfall totals and timing.
