Iowa’s September Unemployment Numbers Finally Released

Iowa Workforce Development has released the state’s first unemployment report since the recent government shutdown, offering a delayed snapshot of September’s labor market. According to agency spokesperson Jesse Dougherty, Iowa’s unemployment rate dipped to 3.7% in September, a decrease of one-tenth of a percentage point from the previous month.

Dougherty described September as a steady month for employment. He said the state saw encouraging movement in both participation and hiring, with the labor force growing and about 3,700 jobs added during the month.

Still, he urged Iowans not to overread a single month of data—especially one published late. Because the shutdown postponed reporting, Dougherty said more complete information in the coming weeks will better clarify where the economy is headed. While it’s too early to draw firm conclusions from September alone, he noted that the available numbers point in a positive direction as the state returns to a normal reporting schedule.

Recent headlines have highlighted manufacturing layoffs, but Dougherty said September brought at least a small bright spot in that sector. Manufacturing employment rose by roughly 600 jobs, largely driven by gains in durable goods. He called the increase modest but meaningful, adding that the full impact of announced layoffs may not appear until the next report due to lagging effects across supply chains and related industries.

He also pointed to unemployment claims as another sign of economic health. Compared with September of last year, Iowa has recorded about 25% fewer claims—a trend Dougherty described as a clear positive. He noted that seasonal patterns will likely push claims higher in winter, when temporary layoffs are common, but said that’s expected every year.

Federal officials are expected to publish updated workforce figures for October and November next month, which Dougherty said will give a clearer, more current read on Iowa’s labor market.
