Waldorf Football Hires New Head Coach

David S. Calloway Named Head Coach

Today, Waldorf University announced the hiring of David S. Calloway as the new head coach of the Waldorf Warrior football team. This move comes after former head coach Tyler Chapa announced his resignation from the position on November 17. Coach Calloway will become the sixth head coach to lead the Warriors since they became a four year institution.

Coach Calloway comes from more than 25 years of football experience at the collegiate level. Most recently, Coach Calloway was the associate head coach and defensive coordinator at Missouri Valley College, an NAIA school in the Heart of American Conference. Prior to that, Calloway was the defensive coordinator and defensive line coach at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, a Division 1 football program playing in the Football Championship Subdivision. He coached for the Golden Lions from 2023-2025.

Coach Calloway’s last taste of head coaching experience came at Central Methodist University from 2015-2022. The Eagles are a fellow NAIA program and member of the Heart of America Conference. During his time at Central Methodist University, Calloway accumulated a record of 27–36–1. His best season was in 2021, when he lead the Eagles to a 9-3 overall record, including a 5-0 conference record. They finished the season at No. 14 in the NAIA Football Coaches’ Top 25 Postseason poll and secured their first conference championship since 1975. The nine wins tied for the most victories in school history. As the Heart South Division Champion, the Eagles clinched their first-ever berth into the NAIA-FCS playoffs.

Coach Calloway served as Head Football Coach from 2012-2014 at Texas A&M University-Kingsville. Before that, from 2007-2012, he was the team’s defensive coordinator. The 2010 and 2011 teams made NCAA Division II playoff appearances.

As a player at Langston University from 1993-1996, Calloway was a four-year starter and helped the Lions become two-time Oklahoma Intercollegiate Conference champions in 1993 and 1994. Calloway’s honors during his time at Langston include being named the 1996 Don Hansen National Weekly Football NAIA First Team All-American, 1996 All-Oklahoma Intercollegiate First Team, 1995 Black College Sports Honorable Mention All-American, 1995 All-OIC Second Team Defense, 1994 All-OIC Second Team Defense. Calloway is a member of Langston University’s Athletics Hall of Fame Class of 2025. He was honored as a member of that class at Langston’s homecoming football game this past fall.

Calloway got his coaching career started at Division II Lane College in 1998, serving as the Dragon’s Linebackers coach for two years. After that, he was the defensive coordinator at NAIA Hastings from 2000-2003. He then went back to his alma mater Langston University to serve as the Lions Defensive Coordinator for two seasons before moving to Division II Southeastern Oklahoma State to serve as the Savage Storm Defensive Line coach.

Director of Athletics, Chad Gassman said, “I couldn’t be more excited for Waldorf University and our Football Program. Coach Calloway brings over 25 years of coaching experience at all levels. He’s a proven leader and proven program builder. His priorities align with Waldorf’s mission to educate the whole person: physically, academically, emotionally, and spiritually.”

In a statement from Coach David Calloway, he said, “I want to express my sincere gratitude to President Dr. Robert A. Alsop, Athletic Director Chad Gassman, and the entire search committee for appointing me as the next Head Football Coach at Waldorf University,” Calloway said. “It is an honor to join a community built on pride, purpose, and a relentless competitive spirit. I am excited to lead this program into its next chapter – one defined by strong culture, disciplined performance, and a championship mindset. Together, we will elevate Warrior Football to new heights both on and off the field.”

Coach Calloway will begin his duties on Monday, December 15.
