Wintry Mix Expected Today; Travel Impacts Likely Across Iowa

A fast-moving winter system is expected to bring a mix of snow and light ice to much of Iowa today, creating potentially hazardous travel conditions—especially during the evening commute. The National Weather Service in Des Moines has issued a Winter Weather Advisory from noon to midnight for portions of northern, central, and east-central Iowa.

Forecasters say a band of 2 to 3 inches of snow is likely within the advisory area, accompanied by a light glaze of ice. Snow and freezing drizzle are expected to begin late this morning, with the heaviest impacts between noon and 6 p.m. As temperatures fall below freezing after sunset, roads may quickly become slick.

The wintry mix is expected to continue through the evening before tapering off late tonight. Motorists are urged to use caution, slow down, and check updated travel conditions before heading out.

This system is only the first in a series of winter events. Another round of snow is expected Saturday, with light but steady accumulations of one to two inches likely across central and southern Iowa. Dangerously cold wind chills are forecast Sunday morning, with values dropping well below zero across much of the state.
