Strong Winds, Snow Bursts Expected Across Iowa Thursday

Residents across north-central Iowa should prepare for hazardous weather conditions on Thursday as strong winds, falling temperatures, and scattered snow bursts move through the area.
Winds will increase Thursday morning, with sustained speeds of 25 to 35 miles per hour and gusts reaching between 40 and 50 miles per hour. A Wind Advisory will be in effect for much of the state, beginning at 9 a.m. west of Interstate 35 and noon east of I-35, continuing through 6 p.m.
The strongest winds are expected between noon and 5 p.m., creating dangerous crosswinds, especially on open roadways. Drivers of high-profile vehicles are urged to use caution. Strong gusts could also displace outdoor holiday decorations and may result in isolated power outages.
In addition to the wind, falling temperatures throughout the day may cause roads to refreeze, creating slick travel conditions. Scattered snow bursts are expected to develop late Thursday morning into the afternoon, with the highest chance across northern Iowa. While little accumulation is expected, brief bursts of snow — including possible snow squalls — could rapidly reduce visibility and make travel dangerous with little warning.
Snow squalls can create near whiteout conditions for short periods of time, and drivers are urged to slow down or delay travel if conditions worsen. Peak timing for snow bursts is expected between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
Officials recommend securing loose outdoor items, allowing extra time for travel, and checking road conditions before heading out.
