Winter Storm Watch Issued for Northern Iowa as Blizzard Conditions Possible Sunday

A Winter Storm Watch has been issued for portions of northern Iowa, with blizzard conditions possible from Sunday morning through late Sunday night, according to the National Weather Service in Des Moines.
Forecasters say rain will transition to snow early Sunday, continuing through the early afternoon. While snowfall totals are currently expected to range between 1 and 4 inches, officials stress that strong winds and sharply reduced visibility will be the primary hazards.
Northwest winds are forecast to gust between 45 and 50 miles per hour, leading to significant blowing and drifting snow. The highest confidence for whiteout conditions is across northern Iowa, particularly along and north of Highway 20, though blowing snow may also impact parts of central Iowa.
Visibility could drop below one-quarter mile at times, especially during the peak of the storm from noon to 6 p.m. Sunday. Even after snowfall ends, strong winds Sunday night may prolong hazardous travel conditions.
A brief period of freezing rain is possible early Sunday, but forecasters expect any ice accumulation to be minimal.
Travel is expected to be very difficult on Sunday, especially on north–south roadways, where strong crosswinds could make driving dangerous. Officials warn the storm may significantly impact post-holiday travel across northern Iowa.
The National Weather Service urges residents to monitor forecast updates, prepare winter travel kits, and consider altering travel plans if possible. The next scheduled update from the Weather Service is expected by 5 p.m. Saturday.
Motorists are also encouraged to check Iowa 511 for the latest road conditions before traveling.
