Blizzard Conditions Continue Across Northern Iowa, Travel Strongly Discouraged

The National Weather Service in Des Moines says dangerous blizzard conditions will continue across much of northern Iowa through tonight, with impacts likely lasting into Monday morning.

Forecasters report whiteout conditions with zero visibility due to heavy blowing and drifting snow, combined with strong northwest winds gusting between 40 and 55 miles per hour. Officials say these conditions are creating life-threatening travel, prompting road closures across the region.

The Blizzard Warning, which was recently expanded south to include the Highway 20 corridor, remains in effect through the overnight hours. Snowfall will gradually diminish toward sunrise Monday, but travel impacts are expected to persist due to continued strong winds and slick road conditions

The heaviest snow totals and longest duration of snowfall are expected near the Minnesota border, where blowing snow has already forced some counties to pull plows off the roads. Officials urge drivers to stay off the roads if at all possible.

In addition to snow and wind, dangerously cold wind chills are expected to continue through Monday night. Residents are advised to limit time outdoors, cover exposed skin, and bring pets indoors.

The National Weather Service says this will be the final scheduled update on the storm, but emphasizes that conditions remain hazardous and could affect the Monday morning commute.

Drivers are encouraged to check Iowa 511 for the latest road conditions before attempting any travel.
