Southbound I-35 reopens at Albert Lea

Southbound I-35 traffic into Iowa was closed on Sunday after the Iowa DOT closed because of blowing snow and dangerous winter driving conditions. Better conditions allowed the Iowa DOT to open I-35 in north Iowa. Southbound I-35 at Albert Lea is now open.

MnDOT snowplow operators continue to work after a potent winter storm impacted the region. The no travel advisory was lifted earlier this morning on most state highways in southeast Minnesota. Weather conditions have improved however motorists are encouraged to continue to use caution.

Winter travel tips

Check 511 before traveling, make sure they have a full tank of gas and winter survival kit, and remember to:

• Don’t drive distracted.
• Stay alert for snowplows, which turn or exit frequently and may travel over centerlines or partially in traffic to further improve road conditions.
• Stay back at least 10 car lengths behind the plow. Don’t drive into a snow cloud.
• Slow down to a safe speed for current conditions.
• Turn on your headlights and wear your seat belt.
• Turn off the cruise control.
• Be patient and remember snowplows are working to improve road conditions for your trip.
