Winnebago County Sheriff Urges Drivers to Stay Off Roads Amid Dangerous Blizzard Conditions

The Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office is urging motorists to stay off the roads as blizzard conditions continue to create dangerous and, in some cases, impassable travel across the county.
Officials say many main highways and travel routes are currently blocked by snowdrifts and stranded vehicles, making it difficult for snowplows and tow trucks to safely reach problem areas. Deputies report that visibility remains extremely poor and road conditions are worsening rather than improving.
The sheriff’s office is also dealing with stranded interstate traffic, as travelers attempting to reroute around closed roads have become stuck within Winnebago County. Authorities say these situations are stretching emergency resources and making response times longer.
“Please take our word for it — conditions are terrible out there,” the sheriff’s office stated. “Staying put until the weather and visibility improve is the safest option for everyone.”
Officials emphasize that venturing out at this time could result in motorists becoming stranded for extended periods. Those who choose to travel despite warnings are urged to be fully prepared to remain in their vehicles, potentially for hours, until help can safely arrive.
While authorities acknowledge that many people have work and other obligations, they stress that this weather event is making travel not just difficult, but dangerous.
The Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office thanks residents for their patience and understanding and urges everyone to use common sense, avoid unnecessary travel, and stay home if at all possible until conditions improve.
For KIOW News, residents are reminded to monitor local updates and road condition reports and to prioritize safety during this winter storm.
