SUV Crashes into Hampton Dumont High School

Classes are scheduled to resume until January 5th, but there is a possibility that students may have to find an alternate way to get into the Hampton Dumont High School. That’s because an SUV allegedly driven by 64 year old Kirk Gunderson slammed into the front entrance of the school and proceeded through the cafeteria to the lunch line door. The incident occurred around 9pm and local police were notified almost immediately.
Gunderson was charged with Operating While Intoxicated and a number of other traffic citations. He was transported to the Franklin County Jail on Saturday night but was released the next morning.
Police say there were no injuries.
Hampton Dumont Community Schools Superintendent Tim Felderman went on social media and posted the following:
On Saturday night, there was an incident in which a vehicle drove through the front of the High School. The vehicle proceeded through the cafeteria and struck the lunch line door. The Hampton Police Department promptly responded, along with our tremendous building and grounds staff. No students or staff were harmed.
“We were able to create a temporary enclosure for the front entrance. A special thank you needs to be extended to ProWall (Trevor Reysack) for helping to secure the front of the building.
“While this is less than ideal, the administrative team will put together a re-entry plan for when we return to school on January 5, 2026. “We will make sure that the building is structurally sound, safe and secure from any debris prior to students returning.
Students and staff have been asked to watch for additional information from the school district on how the the facility when school resumes on the 5th.
