Fireworks Legal in Iowa on New Year’s Eve, With Limits on New Year’s Day

Iowans planning to ring in the New Year with fireworks are being reminded that state law allows their use around the holiday, but only during specific dates and hours.
Under Iowa law, consumer fireworks may be legally used between December 10th and January 3rd. On most days during that period, fireworks are allowed from 9 a.m. until 10 p.m.
New Year’s Eve is one of the exceptions. Fireworks may be set off on December 31st until midnight, giving Iowans extra time to celebrate the arrival of the New Year.
On New Year’s Day, however, the standard hours apply. Fireworks are legal from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. on January 1st.
State law also prevents cities and counties from banning fireworks outright on December 31st, though local governments may still regulate where fireworks can be used and enforce safety rules. Fireworks may only be used on private property with the owner’s permission, and people are urged to keep a safe distance from buildings, vehicles and spectators.
Officials remind Iowans that fireworks can be dangerous if used improperly, and anyone celebrating is encouraged to follow all safety guidelines and be mindful of neighbors, pets and weather conditions.
