Make a New Year’s Resolution to Help Other Iowans by Giving Blood

As 2026 begins, the American Red Cross says blood supplies across Iowa are dangerously low and donors are urgently needed.

Iowa Red Cross spokesman Josh Murray says the start of the year is often a tough time for blood collection, and he’s encouraging Iowans to think about how they can help not just once — but throughout the year.

Murray says the only way to keep blood available for patients is through volunteer donors, and most people know someone who has needed blood at some point.

The Red Cross held more than 1,200 blood drives across Iowa this year and collected more than 30,000 units of blood. Murray says if you’re considering a New Year’s resolution, giving blood — or donating more regularly — is one that can have an immediate impact.

He says many first-time donors end up becoming lifelong donors after realizing the process is quick and manageable.

People can donate whole blood every 56 days. The entire appointment usually takes less than an hour, and the actual blood draw typically lasts about ten minutes.

To find a blood drive near you, Murray says you can visit redcrossblood.org, enter your ZIP code, and schedule an appointment. He says most donation locations will have normal hours, with only minor adjustments around the holidays.

The donated blood is used to help patients facing serious medical issues, including cancer, sickle cell disease, childbirth complications, and traumatic injuries. Murray says a steady blood supply is critical — especially in emergencies, when hospitals rely on blood already on the shelves.
