Iowans Can Start 2026 with a Walk in the Woods

Iowans looking for a healthy way to kick off the new year can head outdoors today for a First Day Hike.

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources says hikes are planned in 44 state parks and forests across the state — and they’ll go on rain, shine, or snow.

Sherry Arntzen, chief of the DNR’s Parks, Forests and Preserves Bureau, says the hikes are a family-friendly way to enjoy Iowa’s parks on New Year’s Day, with trail options for just about everyone.

Some guided hikes are as short as a half-mile, while one of the longest options is a six-mile hike planned in western Iowa.

DNR staff and volunteers will lead free, guided First Day Hikes in 23 state parks. Another 21 parks and forests are recommending routes for hikers to explore on their own.

Some locations will also offer snacks and hot drinks after the hike.

Arntzen says since Iowa weather can change quickly, hikers should check the forecast before heading out, dress in layers, and don’t forget water — even in the winter.

This marks the 14th year Iowa parks have offered First Day Hikes. Arntzen says the idea started in Massachusetts in 1992 and spread nationwide through state park systems to encourage people to enjoy parks during what’s often considered the off-season.

Details, including locations and start times, are posted online through the Iowa DNR.
