Preliminary numbers show Iowa recorded its lowest traffic death total in 100 years.
The Iowa Department of Transportation reports 260 traffic deaths in 2025 through December 31st. The DOT will wait 30 days before releasing a final total, to account for people who may die from injuries suffered late in the year.
December was the lowest month of 2025, with 10 deaths. The state also saw 26 fewer deaths in December compared to the same month last year.
August was the deadliest month, with 36 deaths — the only month in 2025 to top 30.
Overall, Iowa traffic deaths are down 97 compared to 2024.
