Tax Refunds Could Run Bigger This Year — Here’s Why

MASON CITY, Iowa — Some taxpayers across north central Iowa could see larger-than-usual refunds when they file 2025 returns this spring, driven by changes tied to the federal law often dubbed the “One Big Beautiful Bill” and how withholding worked during 2025.

What’s behind the bigger-refund talk?

The IRS said it did not change certain withholding tables for tax year 2025 as part of its phased implementation of the new law. That can mean some workers had more tax withheld from paychecks than the new rules ultimately require, potentially translating into larger refunds at filing time.

What it means for Iowa paychecks

Iowa’s Department of Revenue has noted Iowa generally conforms to federal tax law changes, and the state updated its 2026 withholding approach to reflect the new federal law. But that doesn’t automatically change what happened to withholding during 2025—which is what this spring’s tax returns are based on.

A quick heads-up for filers

Tax pros stress that a bigger refund isn’t always “free money” — it can also mean you overpaid during the year and are getting it back now. If you want more take-home pay going forward, it may be worth reviewing your W-4/IA W-4 choices.
