Saint Ansgar Theater Gets National Grant to Spotlight American History

SAINT ANSGAR, Iowa — Cedar Summerstock Theatre in Saint Ansgar has been awarded an $18,000 National Endowment for the Arts grant to support a 2026 season centered on American history, tied to the nationwide lead-up to the United States’ 250th anniversary.
The funding will help underwrite musical productions and add community programming such as talkbacks, panel discussions, and educational displays designed to give audiences more historical context alongside the performances.
This summer’s lineup includes Newsies Jr., inspired by the 1899 Newsboys Strike, along with Grease, Sister Act, and The Hormel Girls. The theater also plans a special America250 showcase featuring short comedic pieces connected to well-known figures and moments in U.S. history.
Cedar Summerstock leaders said the grant will strengthen both the organization’s productions and its broader mission of bringing professional-level theater — and theater training opportunities — to rural northern Iowa.
