Winter Weather Advisory Issued for Much of Northern and Central Iowa

DES MOINES — The National Weather Service in Des Moines has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for much of northern and central Iowa as snow showers and strong winds are expected to impact the region late Thursday night through Friday.
In northern Iowa, the advisory begins at midnight tonight and continues until 9 p.m. Friday. For central Iowa, the advisory will be in effect from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday.
Forecasters say residents can expect snow showers and snow squalls, with total snow accumulations of up to one inch. While snowfall amounts are expected to remain relatively light, strong winds gusting between 40 and 45 miles per hour could significantly reduce visibility.
According to the National Weather Service, the main concern will be rapidly changing road conditions, including localized whiteout or blizzard-like conditions, especially during heavier snow squalls. These conditions could make travel hazardous during the Friday morning and evening commutes. Gusty winds may also cause tree branches to fall.
Drivers are urged to slow down and use caution if traveling, particularly when encountering sudden drops in visibility. Officials recommend checking current road conditions before heading out.
For the latest travel information, motorists can use the Iowa 511 app, visit www.511ia.org, or dial 511.
Residents are encouraged to stay alert and monitor weather updates as conditions can change quickly.
