Blowing Snow, Bitter Cold Grip Iowa as Arctic Air Moves In

A stretch of wintry weather is impacting Iowa, bringing light snow, strong winds, and dangerously cold temperatures through the weekend and into early next week.
Light snow is lingering across the state this morning and is expected to taper off by this afternoon. While snowfall amounts remain minor, northwest winds gusting up to 30 miles per hour are creating areas of blowing snow and reduced visibility. Slick road conditions are also possible, especially during periods of falling snow, making travel hazardous at times.
High temperatures today will struggle to warm, ranging from roughly 5 to 15 degrees, reinforcing the bitterly cold conditions.
Another round of light snow is forecast for Sunday. Accumulations are again expected to be minimal, but stronger northwest winds will become the primary concern. Gusts could reach around 40 miles per hour by Sunday afternoon and evening, leading to additional blowing snow and spotty snow showers across the region.
Colder air will surge into the state late Sunday, setting the stage for dangerous cold by early Monday. Wind chill values are expected to drop to between 15 and 25 degrees below zero, posing a risk for frostbite on exposed skin in a short amount of time.
Residents are urged to use caution while traveling, dress in layers, and limit time outdoors during the coldest periods. The combination of wind, cold, and snow will make conditions feel especially harsh across northern Iowa through the start of the week.
