GRIMES, Iowa — With arctic temperatures forecast to move across Iowa, Black Hills Energy is encouraging residents to prepare for the cold while taking steps to conserve energy and manage heating costs.

The utility says colder weather typically leads to higher energy usage, as it takes more energy to heat homes and businesses when temperatures drop — even if thermostats remain set at the same level. Black Hills Energy officials are urging customers to be mindful of energy use to help save both energy and money during the cold snap.

Among the tips shared by the company:

• Lower thermostat settings a few degrees and close curtains to help keep warm air inside.

• Turn water heaters down to 120 degrees and make sure they are properly insulated.

• Adjust indoor humidity levels, as a well-humidified home at 68 degrees can feel as comfortable as a dry home at 75 degrees.

• Ensure fireplace dampers are tightly closed when not in use.

• Use kitchen, bathroom and other ventilation fans only when necessary.

• Cook multiple dishes at the same time when possible to reduce oven use.

• Skip the dishwasher’s drying cycle and allow dishes to air dry.

• Unplug office equipment and household appliances, such as printers, scanners and coffee makers, to prevent energy use when they are not in operation.

Black Hills Energy also noted that conservation measures alone may not be enough for some customers. Those struggling to keep up with monthly energy bills are encouraged to explore available assistance options.

The company offers extended payment arrangements and a Budget Billing program that averages monthly energy costs throughout the year.
