How to Prevent Frozen Pipes During Extreme Cold

As extreme cold settles into north central Iowa, homeowners are being urged to take steps now to prevent frozen pipes, a common and costly problem during prolonged subzero temperatures.

Local utility officials say one of the most important precautions is to protect pipes in unheated or exposed areas, including basements, crawl spaces, garages, and attics. Pipes in these locations should be properly insulated to help retain heat and reduce the risk of freezing.

During periods of extreme cold, residents may also consider letting a small stream of water run, especially overnight when temperatures are coldest. Moving water is less likely to freeze, particularly when air temperatures hover near freezing or drop rapidly.

Homeowners are encouraged to open cabinet doors beneath sinks, especially those located along exterior walls. This allows warm indoor air to circulate around plumbing that may otherwise be exposed to cold air.

Another key step is to seal cracks and gaps around windows, doors, and foundations. Cold air entering the home can quickly freeze nearby pipes, even if the rest of the house remains warm.

Outdoor plumbing should not be overlooked. Residents should disconnect and drain garden hoses and shut off water supply lines to outdoor faucets when possible. Leaving hoses attached can trap water and increase the risk of frozen or burst pipes.

Officials also recommend keeping home thermostats set at a consistent temperature, even when away, and checking on neighbors who may be elderly or living in older homes with less insulation.

With wind chills dropping well below zero across north central Iowa, taking preventative steps now can help residents avoid frozen pipes, water damage, and costly repairs during the coldest days of winter.
