State of North Iowa Event Highlights Housing Growth and Community Pride

MASON CITY, IA — Regional leaders, developers, and community members gathered Thursday at the Surf Ballroom Music Experience Center for the annual State of North Iowa program, focusing on housing development and strengthening pride across the region.

This year’s theme, “Love Where You Live,” centered on efforts to expand housing opportunities while fostering a strong sense of place in North Iowa communities.

Housing initiatives took center stage during a panel discussion led by Chad Schreck of the North Iowa Corridor Economic Development Corporation. He was joined by Sam Erickson of the Community Housing Initiative, Jon Snow of Snow Construction, and Shelley Oltmans of the North Iowa Corridor EDC. Schreck highlighted how Mason City and Clear Lake’s designation as Thriving Communities has helped attract both public and private investment to the area.

Panelists shared insights into how those investments are driving regional growth and discussed several housing projects currently underway across North Iowa, emphasizing the importance of addressing housing needs to support workforce development and long-term economic stability.

Another major focus of the event was community pride and placemaking, exploring what it truly means to “Love Where You Live.” That discussion featured Stacy Doughan of the Clear Lake Area Chamber of Commerce, Danielle Pace of Clear Lake Bank & Trust, and Matt Curtis of Wayne’s Ski and Cycle.

Panelists highlighted recent placemaking investments, including the Prairie Rock Trail system, Bill Schickel Plaza and Riverwalk, and the Surf District, noting how these projects enhance quality of life and help attract both residents and visitors. Speakers also discussed the intangible factors that draw people to North Iowa, such as community connections, local businesses, and a shared sense of belonging.

Community leaders also shared early insights into the development of a regional community culture statement and upcoming marketing efforts designed to strengthen resident engagement and foster long-term pride throughout North Iowa.
