Lake Mills Students to Attend Human Trafficking Awareness Presentation

LAKE MILLS, Iowa — Lake Mills Community Schools will host a human trafficking awareness presentation for middle school and high school students on Wednesday, Feb. 4, focusing on online safety and the risks associated with social media.

The presentation, titled “Navigating the Dangers of Human Trafficking in Social Media,” will be led by Ray Fiedler, coordinator for the Iowa Office to Combat Human Trafficking within the Iowa Department of Public Safety’s Division of Intelligence and Fusion Center.

Middle school students will attend the session beginning at 8:20 a.m., followed by a presentation for high school students at 10:07 a.m. The event will be held in the school auditorium, and local law enforcement agency personnel have also been invited to attend.

Fiedler is a retired special agent with the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation and spent more than 20 years working in the Major Crimes Unit, investigating cases involving homicide, kidnapping, sexual assault, burglaries and other serious crimes. He now trains public and private entities and assists agencies with human trafficking investigations, drawing on real cases he has worked throughout his career.

Earlier this year, members of the Lake Mills Student Council attended a condensed version of the presentation in Des Moines and returned impressed by its relevance and impact, according to school officials.

Lake Mills Community Schools officials say the presentation is intended to provide students with valuable awareness and practical guidance on a critically important topic, particularly as online platforms continue to play a major role in students’ daily lives.
