Attorney General Bird Announces Partnership to Provide Safety Technology for Domestic Violence Survivors

DES MOINES — Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird announced a new partnership aimed at supporting survivors of domestic violence through added safety technology and resources.

During a press conference, Bird said the initiative brings together the Attorney General’s Office, the Iowa Coalition Against Domestic Violence and Ring, an Amazon company. Through the collaboration, the Iowa Coalition Against Domestic Violence has received 1,000 Ring X Line devices, each with a lifetime subscription, to distribute to domestic violence survivors across the state. Ring is also providing a $25,000 donation to support the coalition’s ongoing work in Iowa.

Bird, a former prosecutor, said the initiative reflects the realities she has seen working with victims of domestic abuse.

“No one chooses to be a victim—and no one is prepared for it,” Bird said. She added that the partnership will help survivors of domestic violence by providing additional tools to improve safety and peace of mind.

The devices will be distributed by participating organizations on a first-come, first-served basis to eligible survivors who choose to include the technology as part of their safety planning.

According to the Iowa Coalition Against Domestic Violence, safety planning varies for each survivor, and technology can play an important role in helping individuals regain a sense of security. Executive Director Dr. Maria Corona said the partnership demonstrates the impact of collaboration and investment in survivor-centered resources.

Ring officials say the company has donated more than 35,000 video doorbells and outdoor cameras to more than 800 nonprofit organizations nationwide and to federally recognized tribal organizations whose primary mission is supporting domestic violence survivors.

Amazon Public Policy representative Raquel Medrano said Ring is committed to making safety technology accessible and supporting organizations that help survivors rebuild their lives.
