Clear Lake Man Charged with Stealing Thousands in Tools from Local Hardware Store

CLEAR LAKE, Iowa — A Clear Lake man is facing felony charges after authorities say he stole thousands of dollars’ worth of tools from a local hardware store where he worked as manager.

Herbert Wentzien, 35, has been charged with second-degree theft.

According to court documents, Wentzien was employed as the store manager at Brother’s Ace Hardware in Clear Lake from November 2024 through August 2025. During that time, investigators allege he removed merchandise from the store and kept the items for his own personal use.

Law enforcement officials say approximately $6,500 worth of stolen tools were recovered from Wentzien’s home. An additional $2,000 worth of merchandise remains unaccounted for.

Second-degree theft is a Class D felony under Iowa law. Wentzien’s case is pending in Cerro Gordo County District Court.
