Hy-Vee Pharmacists Share Top Five Reminders for a Healthy and Safe Spring Break

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa (March 2, 2026) — With spring break just around the corner, many Iowa families are finalizing travel plans. To help ensure vacations stay healthy and stress-free, Hy-Vee pharmacists are offering five key reminders to prepare for a safe trip.

From vaccinations to sunscreen, pharmacists say a little preparation can go a long way in preventing common travel-related health concerns.

1. Get up to date on vaccines

Before heading out of town, families are encouraged to make sure they are current on recommended vaccinations. While vaccines are particularly important for international travel, illnesses can spread quickly in crowded settings regardless of destination.

Hy-Vee pharmacies offer a wide range of vaccinations, and appointments can be scheduled online for convenience.

2. Pack a few medical essentials

Pharmacists recommend packing a small supply of basic medications to handle minor issues that may arise during travel. Suggested items include acetaminophen, ibuprofen, allergy medication, antacids and bandages.

Having these essentials readily available can help travelers manage headaches, allergies or minor injuries without interrupting their plans.

3. Bring along hand sanitizer

With children especially prone to messy hands during vacation activities, proper hygiene remains important. Hy-Vee pharmacists advise packing hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol. Frequent handwashing with soap and water is also one of the most effective ways to prevent the spread of infection.

4. Protect your skin from the sun

For families traveling to warmer destinations, sun protection is a must. Pharmacists recommend using waterproof sunscreen with an SPF of 50 or higher to guard against harmful ultraviolet rays. Reapplying sunscreen regularly, especially after swimming or sweating, is also key to preventing sunburn.

5. Keep insects away

In warmer climates, insects can pose more than just a nuisance. Some bugs may carry diseases, making protection important. Hy-Vee pharmacists suggest using insect repellents and choosing kid-friendly options for children.

By taking a few proactive steps before departure, pharmacists say families can focus less on unexpected health issues and more on enjoying their time away.
