Winnebago County Food Banks Receive $1,000 Pork Grant, Additional Bacon Donation

WINNEBAGO COUNTY — Local food banks across Winnebago County received a significant boost this week thanks to a grant from the Iowa Pork Producers Association and an additional contribution from a local grocery store.

On Monday, county food banks were presented with $1,000 worth of pork through the Iowa Pork Producers Association’s “Pork in the Pantry” grant program. The grant was secured by local pork producer Riley Lewis, who applied on behalf of Winnebago County.

According to Lewis, the program requires that the pork be purchased within the county and distributed locally to support area food banks.

“In an act of generosity to support the local food banks, the Forest City HyVee Store also gifted 120 packages of Hormel’s Black Label Bacon to be included alongside the $1,000 Pork in the Pantry gift,” Lewis said.

Representatives from the Forest City, Leland, Buffalo Center and Lake Mills food banks gathered in Forest City this week to receive their boxes of pork products for distribution to families in need.

Lewis described the event as a meaningful moment for those involved. “There was a smile in every aisle,” he said, noting that the donation provides a much-needed boost to food bank inventories and the services they provide throughout the county.

The combined contributions are expected to help strengthen local hunger relief efforts and ensure more families have access to quality protein options in the weeks ahead.
