Mason City Council Advances Rezoning Proposal Amid Data Center Concerns

MASON CITY, Iowa — The Mason City City Council has taken the first step toward approving a rezoning request that some residents believe could eventually lead to the construction of a data center in the community.

During its meeting Tuesday night, the council approved the first reading of an ordinance allowing the rezoning by a 4-2 vote.

The proposed rezoning involves several parcels of land located south of the IOOF Home on 19th Street Southwest and east of South Pierce Avenue.

More than a dozen residents spoke during the meeting to voice concerns about the potential impacts of a data center being developed in the area. Residents raised issues including possible environmental effects, increased noise, and potential decreases in nearby property values.

Several speakers also urged the council to conduct additional research before moving forward with the rezoning process. Some residents expressed concern that while a data center could bring short-term construction jobs, it may not provide enough long-term community benefits.

City leaders and economic development officials acknowledged that discussions have taken place about the possibility of a data center project. Chad Schreck, President and CEO of the North Iowa Corridor Economic Development Corporation, told the council that any project considered for Mason City would need to provide clear benefits to the community, such as expanding the local tax base or creating high-value jobs.

Ahead of Tuesday’s meeting, Mason City Mayor John P. Lee also addressed the proposal on social media, explaining what the council’s vote on the first reading would mean for the process.

The ordinance must still go through a second reading before the council can take a final vote on the rezoning proposal.
