Gas Prices Rising Across Iowa Amid Seasonal Trends and Iran Conflict

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Gas prices are rising across Iowa, driven by both typical seasonal factors and growing tensions in the Middle East.
The average price for a gallon of regular gasoline in Iowa has climbed 7.7 cents in the past week, bringing the statewide average to about $2.63 per gallon, according to GasBuddy’s survey of more than 2,000 gas stations. Prices are about 12 cents higher than a month ago, though still roughly 25 cents lower than a year ago.
Despite the recent increase, Iowa drivers are still paying less than the national average. AAA reports the national average for regular gasoline at about $3.32 per gallon, compared with roughly $3.00 in Iowa.
Analysts say prices typically rise in late winter and early spring as refineries undergo maintenance and fuel suppliers transition to summer-blend gasoline. Seasonal tightening in supply often pushes prices higher before the busy summer travel season.
However, geopolitical tensions are also contributing to the recent surge.
Global oil prices have jumped as conflict involving Iran escalates, raising concerns about disruptions to international energy supplies. U.S. crude oil recently climbed above $80 per barrel, its highest level in more than a year, following reports of attacks on oil tankers in the Persian Gulf.
At the same time, Brent crude — a key global benchmark — has surged above $90 per barrel, marking one of the largest weekly increases since the early days of the war in Ukraine.
Energy analysts say uncertainty surrounding the Strait of Hormuz — a vital shipping route that carries about 20% of the world’s oil supply — has rattled markets and pushed fuel costs higher.
GasBuddy analysts warn the conflict could push U.S. gasoline prices higher in the coming weeks if tensions continue and oil prices remain elevated. Some forecasts suggest gasoline prices could climb 10 to 30 cents per gallon nationwide in the near term.
For now, Iowa drivers continue to benefit from prices below the national average. But analysts say global events, combined with seasonal demand, could keep upward pressure on gas prices heading into spring.
