Construction on Iowa 122 in Mason City Resumes March 16; Monroe Avenue Intersection Work Begins

MASON CITY, Iowa – Reconstruction work on Iowa 122 between Monroe Avenue and Pierce Avenue in Mason City will enter its second year beginning Monday, March 16, weather permitting, according to the Iowa Department of Transportation’s Mason City construction office.
The first stage of construction this season will focus on the Iowa 122 and Monroe Avenue intersection and is expected to last about two months. The work will require a partial closure of the intersection as crews reconstruct it.
During the first phase, which is expected to last approximately three weeks, motorists will not be able to make left turns at the intersection from any direction. Drivers traveling on Monroe Avenue will also not be allowed to cross Iowa 122.
Traffic on Iowa 122 will remain open with limited turning movements. Westbound drivers on Iowa 122 will be able to turn right to head north on Monroe Avenue, and westbound traffic will remain accessible to those traveling south on Monroe Avenue. Eastbound Iowa 122 traffic will be able to turn right to go south on Monroe Avenue, and eastbound lanes will remain accessible for drivers traveling north on Monroe Avenue.
After the initial three-week period, the project will move into a second phase lasting about five weeks. During that time, traffic on Iowa 122 will continue to move east and west through the intersection, but Monroe Avenue traffic will not be able to cross or enter Iowa 122.
Despite the construction, Mercy Hospital and Clinic will remain accessible from Iowa 122 via Crescent Drive and Mercy Drive from either direction.
The Iowa DOT reminds motorists to drive with caution in work zones, obey posted speed limits and traffic signs, and remain alert for workers and equipment. Traffic fines for moving violations are at least doubled in work zones. Drivers are also encouraged to allow extra space between vehicles and always wear seat belts.
