Iowa agriculture leaders announce youth-led tree planting initiative for America’s 250th

DES MOINES — Iowa agriculture and youth organizations are launching a statewide tree planting initiative to mark the nation’s upcoming 250th anniversary.

Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig, along with Iowa 4-H and the Iowa FFA Association, announced the effort this week. The initiative encourages youth across the state to plant 250 trees during 2026 as part of the America250 celebration.

Organizers say the project is designed to connect young people with Iowa’s agricultural heritage while promoting environmental stewardship and community service.

“Planting a tree is a simple act that benefits future generations,” Naig said in a statement. “Through this initiative, Iowa 4-Hers and FFA members have an opportunity to honor our nation’s history while strengthening their communities.”

A kickoff event is planned April 24 at the Iowa State Fairgrounds in Des Moines in recognition of Arbor Day. Naig will join 4-H and FFA members to plant a burr oak, Iowa’s state tree, which will serve as the official Iowa America250 tree on the fairgrounds.

Youth organizations across Iowa are encouraged to organize their own planting events in partnership with community leaders, schools and local organizations. Clubs and chapters may also host dedication ceremonies and invite residents to participate.

Mitch Hoyer, director and state 4-H program leader, said the initiative reflects the organization’s tradition of community service and caring for natural resources.

“Participating in the Iowa America250 tree planting initiative is a way for 4-H clubs to practice the 4-H pledge and use their hands in larger service,” Hoyer said.

Scott Johnson, executive director of the Iowa FFA Association, said the project also aligns with FFA’s mission of leadership and community improvement.

“FFA chapters are putting those values into action by improving our environment and investing in the future of rural communities,” Johnson said.

Organizations participating in the effort are encouraged to plant trees on Arbor Day, share photos of events on social media using the hashtag #IowaAmerica250, and register their local activities to help track the initiative’s statewide impact.

The project is supported by the Coalition to Support Iowa Farmers and Frazier Nursery of Benton County, which will provide free regional delivery for trees purchased through the nursery. Orders for trees through Frazier Nursery must be placed by April 10, with delivery scheduled for April 20–23.
