Mid-America Closure Impacts North Iowa Papers, Some to Continue Under New Ownership

HAMPTON — The impending closure of Mid-America Publishing Corporation will bring significant changes to several North Iowa newspapers, though some publications are expected to continue under new ownership.

Mid-America Publishing announced it will cease operations the first week of April, with its final day of business set for April 2. The decision affects numerous newspapers across Iowa, including several in the North Iowa region.

Among those impacted are the Leader and its associated shopper in Garner (Hancock County), the Buffalo Center Tribune (Winnebago County), the Eagle Grove Eagle, Wright County Monitor, and Wright County Reminder shopper (Wright County), and the Clear Lake Mirror Reporter (Cerro Gordo County).

While the company is shutting down, efforts are underway to transition some of these publications to new ownership. As a result, certain newspapers may continue serving their communities without interruption, though details on ownership changes have not been fully released.

Mid-America Regional Editor John Jensen said the closure reflects ongoing challenges facing the newspaper industry.

“This has been a difficult week for our staff both locally and across the state of Iowa,” Jensen said. “Dwindling readership and advertising revenue have taken their toll on newspapers across the nation for years. It is a sad time for both our company and the communities we serve.”

The company’s final editions under Mid-America ownership are scheduled to publish April 1.

The closure impacts five full-time employees and multiple correspondents in northeast Iowa, though staffing changes tied to new ownership arrangements remain unclear.

Mid-America Publishing, based in Hampton, has operated community newspapers across Iowa for decades, in addition to providing commercial printing services for businesses and organizations throughout its coverage area.
