Make It OK Mental Health Awareness Walk Planned in Mason City

MASON CITY, IA — Community organizations across Mason City are coming together this May to promote mental health awareness and encourage open conversations about mental illness.
In recognition of National Mental Health Awareness Month, the Greater Mason City Chamber of Commerce, Community Health Center of Mason City, City of Mason City, and CG Public Health will host the “Make It OK” Mental Health Awareness Walk on Thursday, May 14.
The free event invites community members to wear green and gather in downtown Mason City to help reduce stigma surrounding mental health. Activities will begin at 11:30 a.m. on the downtown plaza, where mental health resource tables will be available until 12:30 p.m.
At noon, Turning Leaf Counseling Executive Director Cody Williams will deliver a brief address, followed by a community walk along a designated portion of the downtown Sculpture Walk. Participants are encouraged to stop by local restaurants for lunch and engage with resource tables at their own pace throughout the event.
Organizers will also offer Resource BINGO cards, allowing attendees to collect information from participating organizations for a chance to enter a prize drawing.
Local businesses and organizations interested in sharing mental health resources can participate by hosting a table. Those interested are asked to contact Jenna Schaefer at the Community Health Center of Mason City at jschaefer@chcmasoncity.com or 641-450-0601. The deadline to register for a table is Friday, April 24.
According to organizers, one in five Americans experiences mental illness each year, underscoring the importance of community awareness and support.
