Prescription Drug Take Back Day Set for April 25 Across Iowa

DES MOINES, Iowa — The Iowa Department of Public Safety’s Office of Drug Control Policy (ODCP) is encouraging residents to participate in National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on April 25, 2026, offering a safe and anonymous way to dispose of unused or expired medications.

The biannual event, organized by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) in partnership with local law enforcement agencies and pharmacies, aims to reduce the risks of opioid misuse and prevent accidental overdoses. It also helps limit environmental harm caused by improper medication disposal.

During the most recent collection in October, Iowans turned in more than 7,071 pounds of unused medicine. Since the program began, the state has collected over 114 tons of medications.

“Properly disposing of unneeded medication helps prevent misuse, accidental overdose, and environmental harm,” said Susie Sher, Bureau Chief of ODCP. “I encourage all Iowans to include their medicine cabinets in their spring-cleaning routine. By taking unused medications to a designated collection site, Iowans are doing their part to keep our communities healthy and safe.”

Collection events will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at designated sites statewide. Officials will accept tablets, capsules, patches, and other prescription drug forms. Liquid medications, such as cough syrup, must remain sealed in their original containers. Syringes, sharps, and illicit drugs will not be accepted.

The DEA will also collect vaping devices and e-cigarettes, provided batteries are removed.

Residents unable to attend the one-day event can utilize one of Iowa’s approximately 400 permanent prescription drug disposal locations available year-round. More information, including site locations, can be found at dea.gov/takebackday or through the Iowa Department of Public Safety website.

Iowans seeking help for substance use or mental health concerns are encouraged to visit YourLifeIowa.org for resources and support.

The Iowa Department of Public Safety, the state’s largest law enforcement agency, oversees multiple divisions working in coordination with local, state, and federal partners to promote safety and public well-being.
