Southbridge Mall Theater Reopens with Grand Celebration and Return to a 1985 Classic

MASON CITY, IOWA – Moviegoers are invited to rewind to 1985 this weekend as the newly renovated Southbridge Mall Theater officially reopens its doors with a grand opening celebration and ribbon cutting ceremony on Saturday, May 16.

The celebration begins at 11:30 a.m. with a community ribbon cutting event welcoming guests back to the theater after renovations aimed at bringing new life to a longtime local entertainment destination.

Following the ceremony, audiences can relive a piece of the theater’s history with special showings of the 1985 classic Footloose. The film holds a special connection to the venue, as it was one of the first movies shown when the theater originally opened as Cinema V on May 23, 1985.

Saturday-only showtimes for Footloose will be held at noon, 3 p.m., 6 p.m. and 9 p.m.

Tickets will be available for purchase at the door, and concessions will also be available throughout the day.

Organizers say the reopening is both a celebration of the theater’s future and a tribute to its past.

“Rewind to 1985 — the curtain rises again,” organizers shared in announcing the event. “We can’t wait to welcome you back.”

Community members are encouraged to attend the grand reopening festivities and enjoy the return of movies on the big screen at Southbridge Mall Theater.
