Mason City man arrested after motorcycle crash in Plymouth

PLYMOUTH, Iowa — A Mason City man was arrested after authorities say he crashed a motorcycle early Sunday morning in Plymouth.
According to the Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched at about 12:39 a.m. on May 31, 2026, to the intersection of Main Street East and Rock Street for a report of a motorcycle crash.
Authorities said 50-year-old Michael Gene Schmitz of Mason City was operating a yellow 2011 Harley-Davidson FXDWG motorcycle eastbound on Main Street East when he attempted to turn north onto Rock Street. Schmitz lost control of the motorcycle, crashed onto the pavement and went off the roadway onto a curb lawn, according to the sheriff’s office.
Schmitz was treated at the scene by the Mason City Fire Department and Plymouth Fire Department for non-incapacitating injuries. He was later taken to MercyOne North Iowa Medical Center for additional treatment and was released.
The Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Office said Schmitz was arrested and charged with operating while under the influence, first offense; possession of a controlled substance, marijuana, first offense; failure to maintain control; and failure to provide proof of financial liability.
The crash remains under investigation by the Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Office. The Mason City Fire Department and Plymouth Fire Department assisted at the scene.
