A Charles City man was seriously injured after the bicycle he was riding was hit by a pickup.
The Iowa State Patrol (ISP) says the collision occurred about five miles southeast of Charles City shortly after 11 am Monday (07.13) morning. The bike, operated by 77-year-old Robert Krueger, was eastbound when he was struck by a Ford F-150 driven by 79-year-old Robert Mehmen, also of Charles City, which was also headed east, near the intersection of 220th Street and Walnut Avenue.
ISP says Krueger suffered serious injuries and he was transported by Mercy AirMed helicopter to MercyOne North Iowa Medical Center in Mason City.
The incident remains under investigation.
Also assisting at the scene was the Floyd County Sheriff’s Office, Charles City Fire and Rescue, AMR Ambulance, Floyd County EMA, and S&T Collision and Towing.
Krueger, an advocate for increasing awareness among motorists to share the road with bicyclists, has been an organizer of the Annual Ride of Silence in Charles City that honors bicyclists who have been killed after being struck by a vehicle.
