Mason City Warns of Payment Scam Emails Targeting Applicants

MASON CITY, Iowa — The City of Mason City is warning applicants and residents to watch for unexpected emails demanding payment for city applications, permits and other services, advising anyone who receives one to verify it before sending money.

According to a city notice, application fees are generally collected when an application is submitted, so applicants should not expect a separate invoice afterward. The city said it will never ask for payment by wire transfer.

Anyone who receives an unexpected payment request tied to a city application or service should verify it before paying.

Official email from the city will come from an address ending in “@masoncity.net,” according to the notice. Residents should check the sender’s address closely before responding to any message.

The city also advised against clicking unfamiliar payment links, downloading documents or providing financial information in response to an unexpected email.

Those who are unsure whether a payment request is legitimate should contact the appropriate city department directly, the city said. Residents should use contact information listed on the official City of Mason City website rather than details provided in the suspicious message.

“When in doubt, please contact City staff to verify the status of your application and whether any payment is actually due,” the notice said. City staff can be reached at 641-421-3600.

The city urged residents to protect themselves from potential payment scams by verifying unexpected requests before sending money or sharing financial information.
